Safe Working Procedure Manual Handling (Issue 5 – November 2009) Policy This policy sets out the requirements of all Managers/Headteachers and staff in order to ensure Southampton City Council meets its statutory duties under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, as amended by the Health and Safety (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2002 and it based on Health and Safety Guidance L23 (Mar 2004). It is the policy of Southampton City Council to: Reduces the risk of Musculoskeletal Disorders to as low as is reasonable practicable Produce suitable and sufficient manual handling risk assessments on significant manual handling tasks/activities. Eliminate the need for manual handling activities. Where manual handling can not be eliminated, the remaining risks will be reduced to as low a level as is reasonably practicable. Where risk to a task/activity cannot be reduced to as low as is acceptable, it will cease until it can be. Identify additional controls and implemented them to reduce the risk to a level as low as is reasonably practicable based on a hierarchy of controls. Provided Information, Instruction and Training to staff, where a residual but acceptable risk remains. Manual Handling Risk assessments will be monitored and reviewed. Managers/Headteachers and Staff/Employees/teachers will carry out their responsibilities detailed in this SWP This Safe Working Procedure applies to all managers including headteachers referred to as managers herein.
