Abstract: M angroves grow mainly in the ecologically sensitive zones between land and sea in the tropical and s btropical
regions. The root system of m angroves prov ides a s itable s bstrat m in wh ich many species of organism s thrive. The
m angrove roots are overgrown by ep ibionts s ch as algae, bivalves and cr staceans, etc. The soft s bstrat m in the com plex
str ct re prov ided by pne m atophores, proproots, tr nks, fallen branches and detrit s form s habitat for vario s benthic
species. And the space betw een roots prov ides shelter and food for motile fa na s ch as prawns, crabs and fishes. Leaf
litter ofmangrove is transform ed into detrit s, wh ich is part of themangrove food w eb along w ith plankton, ep iphytic algae
and m icrophytobenthos. By providing a high ab ndance of food and shelter, and low predation press re, m angroves form an
ideal habitat for a variety of aq atic anmi als, d ring part or all of their life cycles. Smi ilarly, mangroves may f nction as
n rsery habitats for comm ercially mi portant crab, prawn and fish species, and s pport offshore fish pop lations and
fisheries. For the developm ent of s stained fishery and conservation of the m angro
