Lesson 6 Blackmail Arthur Hailey Introduction of the author Arthur Hailey born and educated in Britain. 1939, RAF, emigrated to Canada 1949.He is well known as a top of best-seller and industry novelist. Arthur’s writing feathers He is good at transferring the daily story into a detective novel . Under the background of competition in finance and hotel business, the author always depict the hero as manager or doctor. Background of Hotel Hotel is a 1965 novel by Arthur Hailey. It is the story of an independent New Orleans hotel, the St. Gregory, and its managements struggle to regain profitability and avoid being assimilated into the OKeefe chain of hotels. The St. Gregory is supposedly based on the Roosevelt Hotel. Main character of the novel: Characters : Peter McDermott : manager Warren Trent, proprietor Christine Francis :secretary to Warren Trent Aloysius Royce :administrative assistant to Warren Trent Curtis OKeefe : owner of the OKeefe chain Dorothy DodoLash :OKeefes starlet companion Characters of the novel: Ogilvie: chief house detective the Duke of Croydon: newly appointed British ambassador to the United States the Duchess of Croydon: wife of the Duke Albert Wells : aging hotel guest Julius Keycase Milne: hotel thief Character Analysis A.
