Xi’an Research Institute of Surveying and Mapping, Xi’an 710054, China) Abstract Map is the image which expressing the geographic spatial information, in it, the color symbol represents the different geographic entity. Separating and extracting the spot color of the color map feature are widely used in digital collection and intelligent analysis for the geographic phenomena. This paper discusses the principle and process of scanned map image spot color automatic separation, in the process of the separation, this paper researches into the automatic separation for the scanned map color image, combining image processing techniques, such as image enhancement, image filtering, image denoising and image sharpening to optimize sample and applying some color separation algorithms, such as histogram smoothing, threshold segmentation and fuzzy restricted classification, a better separation result is achieved. This paper also discusses the open questions for the separation results, and presents improved suggestions.
