* * * * * * * * What exactly is SRI? (click and read slide). We’ll get into more of what “computer-adaptive” means. Right now, Scholastic Reading Inventory provides the tools to establish realistic learning goals based on initial reading performance. That is, we should set goals based on where students are performing and where we need to get them, not simply based on what the average student might do. Thus, no student will be thrown into the literacy pool at the deep end without first mastering the challenges in the shallow end. Each student selects their favorite type of books, then takes the assessment, and then receives a custom reading list which gives them books they can read with success on topics they want to read about, thus encouraging independent practice. Teachers and Administrators receive immediate, actionable reports based on the results of this test. In the next few minutes, I’ll show you what these features look like for the various constituents, starting with the student’s experience with SRI. Let’s start here, with the log-On Screen…all students have a username and a password that they use to log into SRI. The student then selects up to 3 topics that interest them. These categories are age-appropriate. As you can see this is the interest screen for grades K-2. All students now come to the Directions Screen where their test taking instructions are clearly spelled out for them. A unique feature of SRI is that it provides immediate, actionable feedback to the student. It is a targeted or recommended reading list based on three important factors: age appropriateness (based on student grade), area of interest (as designated by the student in advance of the test), and ability (how the student did) relative to text difficulty (where the books are on the Lexile Scale).
