In order to guarantee the power distribution reliability and make full use of DG, it’s necessary to discuss the protection scheme of the distribution networks with DG. The influence of DG on the original protection is summed up in this paper. The improving protection methods with DG are thoroughly analyzed and classified, it can be divided into limiting the penetration capacity of DG, promoted adaptive protection, fault location based on the communication technology, islanding detection and islanding partition. The principles and characteristics of these methods are analyzed, the advantages/disadvantages are illustrated and the developing trends of distribution network protection with DG are pointed out. It can be a reference to the study of distribution network protection with DG.
