Listening and discussing Isaac Newton, 牛顿 1642―1727 Universal gravitation 万有引力 Einstein, Albert (1879-1955) 爱因斯坦 Relativity(相对论) and the Cosmos (宇宙) The theory about black holes (黑洞理论) Listen to Part 1 and Part 2 of the tape and choose the best summary of the listening text. A The text is about how three scientists wanted to find out about the beginning of the universe. B The text is about how the idea of gravity has developed over a long period of time. C The text is about the importance of three scientists and their work. Isaac Newton Idea Development Large bodies have a force which pulls things towards them. The bigger the object the stronger the gravity. Listen to Part 1 again and fill in the first column of the chart. Then listen to Part 2 again and fill in the rest. Idea Development Albert Einstein Stephen Hawking In space large objects make space and time bend; the larger the object, the further space and time bend. Black holes have a very large mass and pull things towards them. If you go over the edge, you cannot get out; but if you do not, you may be able to escape. Time goes slower in very strong gravity. Reading A VISIT TO THE MOON Read the whole passage and answer the following questions. How many times would the force of gravity change on our journey? Why is the spaceship not falling back to he earth? What happened when the writer tried to step forward? He found he was carried twice as far as the earth and fell over.
