Teaching aims
1. To listen to lectures and take notes.
2. To practise justifying arguments.
3. To practise using listening strategies to get down detailed information.
4. To practise using phrasal verbs.
5. To practise using the vocabulary of some endangered animals.

1. Listening: a lecture and a dialogue and take notes.
2. To practice justifying arguments.
3. To practise using the vocabulary of some endangered animals.
Teaching procedures
Step 1 Revision
Review the new words of Lesson 1:
consensus, bounce, agriculture, coincidence, sacrifice, advocate
Step 2 Learn the new words
conversation, extinct, habitat, preserve
Step 3 Listening
1. Before you start
a) Exercise 1: Match the names of the endangered species with the pictures: panda, Yangtze dolphin, crested ibis, snow leopard, tiger, Yangtze alligator.
b) Ask students to look at the pictures and do the exercise individually. Then go through the pictures and check answers.
c) Exercise 2: Students look at the words and explain the meaning of the words. Then do the exercise on the blackboard.
conservation---the action of protecting something
extinct---no longer in existence
habitat---the natural home or environment
preserve---maintain something in its original or existing state
2. Listen to learn
a) Ask students to look at the listening strategies and review them together.
(1) Listen for “topic” words, e.g. endangered, species, decrease. These words are usually stressed and the facts are often repeated, e.g. rear, few, extinct.
(2) List your main points using numbers or asterisk. This makes your notes easier to read when you look at them later.
(3) Don’t try to write down everything; select important information.
(4) Use abbreviations and your own shorthand.
b) Listen to the tape, do exercise 3. Let students write some notes.
c) Exercise 4: Students work in pairs and use their notes to make senten
