This is, however, not true for composites in general. It is pointed out in the paper that the ultimate failure of laminated composite beams subjected to bending cannot be fig- ured out only based on a stress failurecriterion. Thus, the design and analysis for theultimateload carrying capacity of composite structures requirenot only a stress failure criterion but also a critical deformation related condition. To show this, some experimental evidences are summarized in the paper. Another purpose of this paper is to present some latest results achieved by the authors in the relevant research areas especially in determination of the ultimate bending strength of laminated composites.
