Daniel Bauer 015130@.tw For Sophomores and above Class size: 10-45; Non-English Dept.: 5 (must all have taken at least one course related to literature such as Introduction to Western Literature) Prerequisite: Introduction to Western Literature This course focuses on the Romantic to the early 20th century period of English Literature. Students who have already studied and finished the course English Literature I should be able to appreciate and enjoy the literature of the Romantic writers, who mostly offer readers poems of moderate length that tell simple stories about life, human nature, social justice, and spiritual values. A few of the authors we will read and discuss in class are William Blake, Robert Burns, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Lord Byron. The course demands strong student participation. The instructor will rely mostly on lecture, Q and A (students writing down responses and asking questions about the literature) and careful journal responses for teaching methods. A mid-term and final exam are required, as well as three (3) four page (minimum) typed journals. This three credit course will meet twice weekly. It seeks a balance among various genres—the novel, short fiction, drama, and poetry—and among various perspectives on American life. Serious students in this course can expect to become familiar with developments in American literature and the arts since 1865 and to acquire skills in literary analysis.
