68 17 Title: Pursuit and Failure of Connection—An Analysis of the Imitaiton and Adaption of Myths and Archetypal Images in The Road from Colonus Abstract: The Road from Colonus explores the cultural identity of Lucas, an old English man in a heterogeneous cultural background of Greece, and portrays the image of English modern people with an underdeveloped heart in the context of Greek mythology. On the one hand, Forster reveals the divinity of natural spirit and the importance of interpersonal communication by the imitation of Oedipus myth and the use of archetypal images; on the other hand, through the parody and adaptation of the myth and natural imagery, this connection has been endowed with the nihilism color and ironic effect. This paper explores Lucas effort for connection and fi nal failure in the light of Forsters imitation and adaptation of Greek myth and archetypal images, in the hope to invoke attention and refl ection on the inheritance and loss of liberal humanism in modern society.
