William Faulkner 威廉 福克纳 (1897-1962) Writing career The early period (1924-1929) The second major creative period (1930-1942) The third period (1942-his death 1962) 1924—1929 During this period ,Faulkner produced a collection of poems and three novels : The Marble Faun (His first book of poems) Soldier’s Pay《士兵的报酬》(The fictional work in favor of the “Lost Generation ” Although Faulkner is heavily identified with Mississippi, he was residing in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1925 when he wrote his first novel. Mosquitoes 《蚊群》 Sartoris《萨托里斯》(1929),the first book of his Yoknapatawpha County(约克那帕诺费亚)or his long ,loosely constructed Yoknapatawpha saga. 1930-1942 During this period，2 collections of stories and 9 novels were composed ,most of which center about Yoknapatawpha saga and have passed as the modern classics. As I Lay Dying（1930）《我弥留之际》 Absalom, Absalom！(1936)《押沙龙，押沙龙！》Go Down ,Moses(1942)《去吧，摩西》 Light in August《八月之光》（1932）. Faulkner ’s works of this period were received with indifference and hostility because of the pessimism and violence or the experimental technique .The tide of opinion began to turn back to his favor in the early 1940s.With the publication of the anthology ,in 1946, Faulkner caught the public attention to him again. 1942--His death1962 During the 20 years ,Faulkner brought out 5novels and thus concluded his Yoknapatawpha saga. He accomplished 18 novels ,3 volumes of short stories.
