华北电力大学硕士学位论文 Chapter One Introduction 1.1 Status of Vocabulary in English Teaching and Learning Vocabulary is the building material of a language. Just as a building cannot be constructed without the building material, no language is imaginable without vocabulary. It is very important to acquire as many words as possible in learning a language. Almost every foreign language learner is aware that learning a foreign language involves the learning of a large number of words. No matter how well the student learns grammar, no matter how successfully he masters the sounds of a second language, without words to express a wide range of meanings, communication in that language cannot happen in any meaningful way. Some researchers even believe that the success of language learning depends largely on vocabulary learning, which is something more than memorizing lists of words. Many researchers have discovered that vocabulary knowledge is an excellent predictor of general language ability. (Anderson, 1976) Vocabulary is a key element in language learning because a wide productive vocabulary is essential in enhancing the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Vocabulary knowledge is generally considered an important factor in the comprehension of language; the number of known words is related to skillful language use. So first of all, as language teachers, we must arouse our students’interest in words and their motivation to learn ways of expressing meanings in all four language skills.
