It is recommended that Internet users save files to a local hard drive and then scan them with an up-to-date antivirus product before they double-click or open the file attachments. Using the Registry, the computer system can be configured to automatically prompt the user to save the attached files into the local hard drive and give a warning when an e-mail attachment is accidentally clicked or when an e-mail has some embedded scripts. A registry fix is available at /vinfo/safe_computing/ that applies to Word documents, Excel sheets, Excel charts, PowerPoint files and HTML files. Chapter 5: Safety Computing Tips and Techniques Enable macro virus warning (applies to Office 97 and 2000 users) By default, Microsoft Office applications display a warning before documents containing macros are opened. However, macro viruses usually disable this setting to avoid being detected. It is recommended that the macro virus warning be enabled every time to alert the user of any possibly malicious macros. If unsure whether the macro content encountered is safe or not, always choose to use the Disable Macros option when prompted. Chapter 5: Safety Computing Tips and Techniques Prompt before saving changes to the Global Template Since almost all macro viruses attempt to modify the global template (NORMAL.DOT) before closing the active Microsoft Word session, it is advisable that Microsoft Word be set to prompt the user before any changes are made to the global template.
