2016 1 67 Key Words Xia Dynasty period Erlitou Site urban layout; ﬁ ve ranks of subject states Abstract The present paper makes a comparison between the five ranks of subject states recorded in the Shang shu:Yugongand the Xia Dynasty period city-sites discovered in archaeology up to the present, and carries out an analysis of the two sorts of data. On this basis the author comes to the conclusion that the archaeological features of the Erlitou Site are exactly coincident with theﬁ ve ranks of subject states in the Shangshu:Yugong and that the two items can be taken as maturely supplementing historical materials. The Erlitou Site as the central settlement possessed technical superiority and thus became the center of handicraft and the hub of economic exchange; meanwhile, the distribution pattern of the city-sites in the periphery of Erlitou shows preliminarily the picture that the Xia Dynasty in politics presented a sort of close inward pattern while in economy featured outward expansion, which as an development pattern laid a foundation for the prosperity of cities in the Shang-Zhou times.
