The Pilgrim’s Progress

The Pilgrim’s Progress 《天路历程》 One of the best-selling books of all time, The Pilgrims Progress holds a unique place in the history of English literature. Bunyan captures the speech of ordinary people as accurately as he depicts their behavior and appearance and as firmly as he realizes their inner emotional and spiritual life. Cultural Influence The allegory (寓言,讽喻)of this book has antecedents(前事,经历) in a large number of Christian devotional(虔诚的,信仰的) works that speak of the soul‘s path to Heaven. Bunyan’s allegory stands out above his predecessors(前辈) because of his simple and effective, if somewhat na?ve, prose(散文体) style, steeped in (充满)Biblical texts and cadences(节奏,韵律). He confesses(忏悔) his own na?veté(天真,轻信) in the verse(诗节,韵文) prologue(序幕,开场白) to the book: . . . I did not think To shew to all the World my Pen and Ink In such a mode; I only thought to make I knew not what: nor did I undertake Thereby to please my Neighbour; no not I; I did it mine own self to gratifie. Context in Christendom (基督教徒,基督教世界) The explicit(详尽的,清楚地) Protestant(基督教徒,新教徒) theology (神学)of The Pilgrim‘s Progress made it much more popular than its predecessors. Bunyan’s gifts and plain style breathe life into the abstractions(抽象概念) of the anthropomorphized(人性化) temptations(诱惑) and abstractions that Christian encounters and with whom he converses(认识,谈话) on his course to Heaven. Samuel Johnson said that this is the great merit of the book, that the most cultivated man cannot find anything to praise more highly, and the child knows nothing more amusing. Three years after its publication (1681), it was reprinted in colonial America, and was widely read in the Puritan colonies. Because of its explicit(详尽的) English Protestant theology (神学)The Pilgrim‘s Progress shares the popular English antipathy(厌恶,反感) toward the Roman Catholic(天主教的) Church. It was published over the years (1678-1681) and ten years before the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Bunyan pr
