Lightweighting: Impact on Grade Development and Market Strategy ·1 · Lightweighting: Impact on Grade Development and Market Strategy Nauzin Jean-Paul (FIVES KEODS) Abstract Lightweighting implies to take into account needs of the carmaker such as crash behavior and stiffness. These two main functions lead to conclude that developing grades for structural part (with higher Tensile strength) is not the only way. The replacement of steel used for the big inner and outer panels is mandatory if steelmakers don not want to lose this market because of the efficiency of aluminium. Key words lightweighting, flat carbon steel, car design, market strategy 1 Introduction The development of flat rolled steel is mainly linked to the needs of automotive industry since the end of sixties. Four main periods can be taken into account in this development[1]: (1) 70 S: Improvement of formability of steels because of increasingly complex geometries of part. (2) 80 S: anti-corrosion needs became important for final customers and coated sheet amount strongly increased in body in white. (3) 90 S: Appearance of the first consumerists tests on Crash Behavior (EuroNCap). These increasingly severe tests require the use of more resistant steels. These increasing needs will give birth to families AHSS and PHS in complement of the HSS used since the middle of the Eighties. (4) 00 S: During that period environmental constraints (legislation CO2) were the engine of the
