Some students may have trouble in distinguishing Past Perfect and Past Perfect Continuous.
Background
The newspaper articles are loosely based on those which have appeared in local newspapers in Britain.
Newspaper headlines commonly use idiomatic expressions, especially where there is a double meaning.
Humourous stories are often done with word play. In this lesson stories B and C are typical stories of word play. The original proverb for story B is “When there is a will, there is a way.”

If you are short of time, set some of the exercises for homework (e.g. Exercise 10).

. If you have two periods for this lesson, a suitable natural break is after Exercise 6.
Before you start
Exercise 1
■ Have students read and say the headlines of the three stories after you. Tell them to look up the meaning of any of the words they are unsure of.
■ Students read the headlines and look at the pictures, predicting what each story is about.
■???? Students then work individually, reading the first lines and last lines of the stories, looking at the pictures, matching the stories and the pictures with the headlines.

■ Ask the class if there are any words they do not know in the texts. If so, encourage them to work out the meaning of these words through the context.
