Thinking in Science is Analogous to Reading Critically, Or is It? Donna Alvermann, Ph. D. University of Georgia /lle/faculty/alvermann “A Small Girl Walking Backward” Jon Carroll (1993) begins his story this way: “It was a nice day and I was strolling, just strolling, down a sidewalk in charming, yet frequently maligned Oakland, a city in California. And I saw a girl walking backward.” Jon Carroll’s Story (continued) “Because I did not speak to her, I don’t know the exact parameters of the experiment, but it was something like this: How far can I walk backward without running to into something or tripping or otherwise embarrassing myself?” Jon Carroll’s Story (continued) “This is what kids do; they perform experiments…. In an ideal society, these experimental urges would be gently harnessed to institutions of education. Not happening right now, worse luck. But we still have small girls walking backward.” A Message to Take from the Story Science – a particular way of asking questions Through questioning – express wonderment (about walking backward, for example) Is there time for wondering in school ?
