Need An internal state that makes certain outcome appear attractive. Motivation process Early Theories of Motivation Hierarchy of needs theory Theories X and Y Motivation-hygiene theory Hierarchy of needs theory There is a hierarchy of five human need: Physiological needs Safety needs Social needs Esteem needs Self-actualization needs Hierarchy of needs theory Theories X and Y Theory X Employees dislike work, are lazy, seek to avoid responsibility, and must be coerced to perform. Theory Y Employees are creative, seek responsibility, and can exercise self-direction. Motivation-hygiene theory Intrinsic factor are related to job satisfaction. Extrinsic factor are related to job dissatisfaction. Motivation-hygiene theory Motivation-hygiene theory Contemporary Theories of Motivation Three needs theory Equity theory Job characteristic model(JCM) Expectance theory Three needs theory Need for achievement The drive to excel, to achieve in relation to a set of standards, and to strive to succeed. Need for power The need to make others behave in a way. Need for affiliation The desire for friendly and close interpersonal relationships. Equity theory Employees perceive what they get from a job situation(outcomes) in relation to what they put into(inputs) and then compare their input-outcome ratios of relevant.
