On Application of Cooperative Learning in English Writing Class in Junior Middle School
1. Introduction
Nowadays there have been great changes in basic education. In English teaching, more and more attention is paid to using target language to communicate with others. Cooperative learning, self-regulated learning and inquiry learning are the new methods that New Curriculum Reform advocates in English teaching. Writing, as a way of communication, should also be paid much attention in English teaching. How to improve the students’ writing ability is also a very important question that challenges the teachers of the junior middle school.
The Present Situation of English Writing
It is found that in English writing teaching English teachers in our country mostly adopt traditional teaching model?teacher-centered model. Teachers lay much stress on grammar and vocabulary, aiming at helping students to get desirable marks in the examination to enter the satisfactory schools. Too much attention has been paid to the writing products, while ignoring the writing process and the consciousness of readers. In the traditional approach, the students’ compositions are only judged as final products and the evaluation of writing skills is just on the basis of the production of grammatically and lexically accurate texts, emphasizing feedback from the teacher. The information between the teacher and the student only conveys one-way. The teacher occupies most time of the period, dominating the teaching activities, which goes against the current teaching idea that students should be the center of the classroom activities. The weakness of this approach is that it ignores the process skills, such as planning the text, the audience, generating the ideas and the organization of the text. Therefore, the students need to be taught specific skills to enable themselves to express or explain in their writing process.
