The Modern Echo of English Literature 英美文之现代回声 The Neoclassical Period 新古典主义时期 Part One: What is Neoclassical Period? Last class we learned Renaissance, 文艺复兴,the rebirth and revival of the cultural heritage of Greek and Roman culture. Today let’s move onto the next phase in English Literature, the neoclassical period, 新古典主义时期。 The neoclassical period is between the return of the Stuarts in 1660 and the full assertion of Romanticism which came with the publication of Lyrical Ballads in 1798. Part Two: Key Literary Terms Enlightenment eason 启蒙运动/理性时代 Enlightenment Movement was a progressive intellectual movement, which flourished in France and swept through the whole Western Europe. The movement was a furtherance of Renaissance form the 14th century to the mid-17th century. The purpose of the movement was to enlighten the whole world with the light of modern philosophical and artistic ideas. It celebrated reason of rationality, equality and science. It advocated universal education. Literature at the time became a very popular means of public education. Neoclassicism 新古典主义 With the introduction of the Enlightenment Movement into England, a revival of interest in the old classical works was in full swing. 全力展开 This tendency is known as the Neoclassicism. The neoclassicists held that all forms of literature were to be modeled after the classical works of the ancient Greek and Roman writers. They called for a reference to order, reason and rule, yield place to “eternal truth” “eternal justice” and “natural equality”. Neoclassical Poetry 新古典主义诗歌The neoclassical period witnessed the flourish of English poetry in the classical style climaxing with John Dryden, Alexander Pope and Samuel Johnson.
