Rules of formation of genitive nouns 1) (A-B’s): compound nouns: e.g. my mother-in-law’s death 2) (A’s) and (B’s): separated things: e.g. Mary’s and Bob’s books, 3) (A) and (B’s): have in common: e.g. Helen and Mary’s school. (the same school) 4) (–’s), or (–s’): person’s name with [z] sound ending: e.g. Jones’s letter / Jones’ letter 9. Independent genitive and double genitive Independent genitive: (独立属格) A) When the head noun has occurred somewhere, we should omit the second same noun. e.g. Her memory is like an elephant’s. (独立属格) Mary’s is the largest house. B) When the head noun (missing) is referred to a person’s house or office, a church, school, or other public building, commercial firms etc, we should omit the head noun. e.g. He has gone to the doctor’s. He is staying at his uncle’s. Men’s clothes are sold both at Smith’s and Brown’s. 2) double genitive 双重属格 　　所谓“双重所有格是指名词所有格或名词性物主代词同of构成的所有格，即“of＋名词所有格”。双重所有格有以下几个特征： 　 “of＋名词所有格”中的名词必须表示人，不能表示事物。因此，我们可以说：a play ofShakespeare’s（莎士比亚的一个戏剧）， a friend of my wife’s（我妻子的一个朋友），但却不能说a funnel of the ship’s或 a leg of a table’s，而且该名词必须是特指的，不能是泛指的。比如我们可以说，a friend of the doctor’s（这位医生的一个朋友），a novel of the writer’s（那位作者的一部小说），而不能说a friend of a doctor’s或 a novel of a writer’s。 ---a friend of my father’s, a friend of mine 我许多朋友，其中的一个朋友。 ‘限定词a, an, this, that, these, those, some, every, any, no… + N + of + 名词性物主代词’ (不能用定the) 所有格代词 ：mine, yours, his, hers, theirs, ours, John’s, my father’s, etc. Do you know their meanings? one of my brother’s friends（表示我兄弟有一个以上的朋友） a friend of my brother’s（同上句： 表示我兄弟有一个以上的朋友） a friend of my brother（He is very friendly to my brother.） my brother’s friend（我兄弟唯一的一个朋友或刚谈及的那一个朋友） Exercise in class（r
