Tourism overview of Zhangye Zhangye, located in the middle of Hexi Corridor, it leans on Qilian Mountain in the south and extends to Badain Juran Desert in the north. The city’s total area is 42,000 km2 including one district of Ganzhou and five counties of Linze, Gaotai, Shandan, Minle and Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, 65 townships, 1.28 million population and 38 ethnic groups, in which Yugur ethnic group is nationally and provincially unique minority. Zhangye is also called Ganzhou since the 6th year of Xihan dynasty. It was named after the literary quotation that “In 121 B.C., Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty sent Huo Qubing, the well-known juvenile general, to fight against the Huns, an ancient nationality in China. After defeating the Huns, the emperor firstly set up Zhangye prefecture, therefore, there was the saying that the Huns arms were broken and Zhangye’s armpits were opened, thus making China have an access to the Western Regions”. Historically, Zhangye enjoys the reputation of “Lush Southern-type fields north of the Great Wall” and “Golden Zhangye”. It is the national historical and cultural city and China’s excellent tourism city. The natural scenery of golden Zhangye is grand and majestic. The long Qilian Mountain stretches thousands of miles across Zhangye southwest, the long Heihe River across the whole territory of Inner Mongolia Juyan, glaciers and snow mountains, forest and grassland, oasis of fertile soil, wetland, colorful Danxia landform, the Gobi desert and other extreme landscapes add radiance and beauty to each other, forming the extraordinary scenery of the natural landscape as if done by the spirits. Therefore, it is honored as “Grand view garden of landscapes in China”. Qiyi glacier is the viewable glacier nearest to the urban area in China.
