The decision was made by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Heritage, which met in Bali, Indonesia.  The committee decided to recognize puppetry as a way of spreading knowledge and promoting cultural values, as well as a form of community (社区) and especially youth entertainment.Chinese shadow puppetry is a form of theater with a history of around 2,000 years. It was believed to have been invented by a minister of one of the Han emperors in memory of his deceased wife. In a shadow puppet show, colorful silhouette (剪影) figures perform traditional plays against a backlit (从背后照亮的) cloth screen, accompanied by music and singing. Shadow puppets were first made of paper, then from the hides (兽皮) of donkeys or oxen. This is why the Chinese word for shadow puppet is pi ying, which means shadows of hides. During a show, puppeteers control the puppets with rods that create moving images on the screen. The puppeteer’s skills at controlling the puppets, singing and playing different musical instruments are handed down from master to pupil within families and troupes (戏班子). Despite the arrival of film, television and computers today, ancient forms of shadow puppetry have not totally disappeared.
