Sophia 200992501115 J.P Quay TCFL091-1 21 April 2011 Book Report of Dreaming in Chinese Deborah Fallows, the author of Dreaming in Chinese: Mandarin lessons in Life, Love and Language, is the Harvard graduate with a phD in Linguistics. Deborah Fallows is also the wife of James Fallows, the columnist of The Atlantic. They lived in Beijing and Shanghai during 2006 to 2009, and the book was finished during this time. The Fallows lives overseas all year long and has visited almost all over the world. Interestingly, they had visited China in 1980s, when China just finished the Cultural Revolution. Before learning Chinese, Deborah Fallows has learned five foreign languages including Twi, the language popularly used among the West Africa. Deborah Fallows claims that we should learn Chinese in the real situation, learners are supposed to communicate with local residential as much as possible. In addition, she also analyses the difference of expression between Chinese and English from cognitive perspective. At the first chapter of Dreaming in Chinese: Mandarin lessons in Life, Love and Language tells us something about love. This book was published by Worker Company, New York, dividing the book into 14 chapters. In this book, Deborah Fallows tells us the experience of learning Chinese and communicating with Chinese as well as her understanding of Chinese. The story goes like this: on the way home, Deborah Fallows came across a young Uighur men selling jade by saying I love you. This makes the author think of something about the north western edge of China, especially Xingjiang, which is a poor outpost with deserts and mountains. To change this situation, Uighurs jounery from Xinjiang to sell their local products to the citizens in Shanghai and Beijing. As the people they are faced with are slickers, they learned to cheat. Deborah Fallows takes her experience of buying raisins as an example. When she once bought raisins from a Uighu
