2 .Heat Clearing Chinese Medicinal Herbs Any Chinese medicinal herb that has the main action of cleating away interior heat is considered to be an antipyretic herb. Antipyretic herbs are mostly cold or cool in nature and have the actions to clear away heat, purge fire, dry dampness, cool the blood, relieve toxic materials, clear away deficiency-heat, etc.. They are chiefly used for various internal heat syndromes without exterior pathogenic factors and stagnation marked by febrile disease due to exogenous pathogenic factors with high fever, excessive thirst and dysentery due to damp and heat; maculae due to warm-toxin, carbuncle, ulcer, skin disease, and fever due to yin-deficiency. Depending on different types of qifen, xuefen, asthenia and sthenia of the interior heat syndrome, and on different actions of medicinal herbs, antipyretic herbs are classified as five types, that is, heat clearing and fire purging, heat clearing and dampness drying, heat clearing and toxic materials eliminating, heat clearing and blood cooling, and deficient heat clearing ones. When antipyretic herbs are applied, we must first distinguish the exterior from the interior, or asthenia from sthenia and be sure of the position of heat. If the heat is in qi-fen or qi phase, heat clearing and fire purging medicinal herbs should be applied; if the heat in xue-fen or blood phase, heat clearing and blood cooling medicinal herbs should be applied. There are differences in applica tion of medicinal herbs, that is, the medicinal herbs used for the sthenic heat-syndrome are different in clearing away heat and purging fire, or clearing away heat from yingfen and cooling blood,or clearing away heat from both qifen and xuefen；those used for deficient heat-syndrome are different in clearing away heat and cooling blood, or nourishing yin to clear away heat or cooling blood to remove steaming fever. Meanwhile, antipyretic herbs must be used in combination with others according to sy
