Discuss the Effects of Globalization on University EducationAccording to Held (1999), as cited by RuiYang(2003), globalization has already become a popular word in the late 1900s. There have been a considerable number of different views which have created a huge academic and popular literature on globalization and related topics. According to data collected by Busch (1997), the amount of articles with “globalization/global” in the title have increased almost three times in the past ten years. In order to survive and occupy a significant position in academic field, higher education has begun to integrate into the global community to fulfill the global requirement and even adjust to the international practice. Some people assert that globalization brings a lot of benefits to university education and it will improve the educational quality of the whole world. However, although globalization brings opportunities to university education, argue that it has negative effects on higher the future development of higher education. This article would discuss both views on the effects of globalization on university education. Globalization has critical influence on university institutions and their educational strategies. In order to keep correspondence with rapid developed globalization, university education even becomes an industry which aims to boost economy. According to Postiglione and Jiang(1999), as summarized by RuiYang(2003), in September 1999, the number of matriculates in Chinese universities increased almost 50%, from 1.08in 1998 to 1.53 million students in 1999. This expansion aimed to promote the economy, since the Chinese government believed that parents in China were willing to spend a considerable amount of money on their child’s higher education (Postiglione and Jiang 1999).
