The Ugly Stone
I felt sorry from time to time for the ugly, black stone in front of my house, which crouched in there like an ox. No one knew when it had been left there and nobody bothered to find out. It was only in the season of harvest when wheat kernels/grains were spread over the ground to be dried that Granny deemed it cumbersome for taking up too much space and promised to get it removed sometime.
Therefore, when uncle planned to build a house, he wanted to use it as a cornerstone for the gable, but finally he gave up for its irregular shape and bumpy surface. No one would go so far as to break it apart with a chisel, for the river beach was not far away and anyone could just go there to fetch a better one. Even when it came to paving the steps for the house, my uncle still didn’t think better of it. Once, a stonemason/mason came along to make us a stone grinder, my Granny proposed to him to take the ugly stone instead of getting one from afar. When the mason looked at it, he just shook his head and left it unmoved, unsatisfied with its delicate composition unsuitable for making a mill.
Yet it was not so delicate as the white marble on which could be carved flower patterns, nor was it so smooth as the black granite on which to do the laundry. Lying silently in its position, the rock was not even shadowed by the pagoda tree at the edge of the courtyard and was not surrounded by wild flowers. Thus it was gradually overrun by rank wild grass and furthermore, rusted by green moss and black stains. We children also began to h
