Burns can results when a source is touched or almost touched. The temperature of the source does not cause the burn it is the intensity of the radiation at the surface of the source. Radiation burns are classified similar to burns from fires. · A radiation burn similar to a first degree burn occurs from a dose of approximately 600 rem. The person receiving the burn may feel a sensation of warmth or itching within a few hours of exposure, with a reddening or inflammation of the area occurring several hours later. These symptoms usually disappear with in a few days, but can reoccur in 2 to 3 weeks after the exposure. The skin of the irradiation portion will peel and the irradiation area should be protected from infection. Medical attention is not required. Recovery should be fairly complete. · A dose of 1000 rem is similar to a second degree burn. All the tissue damage described above occurs to inflammation. The inflammation is followed by tenderness and swelling. Blisters form within 1 to 3 weeks and when they break will leave open raw wounds that can be easily infected. Medical attention should be sought to avoid infection and relieve pain. The damage will heal within several months, but some permanent damage, such as scarring, thinning of the skin, and tenderness to injury, pressure and temperature changes is common. · Doses of 2000 to 3000 rem result in injuries similar to a chemical burn or scalding.
