Women And Children First… Meaning  The seafaring command that women and children be the first to board the lifeboats when a ship abandoned. Origin On 26th February 1852, HMS(皇家海军舰艇）Birkenhead sank off the coast of South Africa. The ship was carrying 480 British troops and about 26 women and children. The soldiers commander Colonel Seton told them to Stand fast! and allow the women and children to make use of the few lifeboats. Most of the soldiers and sailors on board were drowned or eaten by sharks, but all the women and children survived. The events on Birkenhead were the first practice of “ women and children first”. A study based on the Titanic and Lusitania disasters proved that : only when people have time to get past their fight-or-flight instincts, women and children first! During both disasters, the ships’ captains issued orders to save women and children first. On the Lusitania , passengers with “simple physical prowess” — those aged 16 to 35 — had the highest probability of survival .
