It takes clauses as its atoms, and relates them hierarchically, using a number of predefined rhetorical relations. It is a descriptive theory of a major aspect of the organization of natural text. The central constructs in RST are rhetorical relations which principally present the text Cohesion. Rhetorical relations are defined functionally, in terms of the effect the writer intends to achieve by presenting two text spans side by side.
