A naly sis on the quantitative characteristics o reg enerated tree species in 34 gaps o K orean pine broad-leaved mixed orest in Chang bai Mountains show s that the requency o regenerated arbo r species w as 7.27 %, and that o shrub species w as 21.02%.A ter g ap ormation, the light-de- manding pio neer tree species invaded irst in gap s, w ith high requency and w ide niche.With the aging o the g ap s, the compe tition among tree species became strong, the grow th o light- demanding tree species w as limited and meanw hile, the shade-tolerant tree species became dom- inant.T here w as a neg ative relationship betw een gap age and its canopy density and area, and betw een gap area and emergence requency o tree species.T he distributio n o gap age w as mainly in tw o periods, rom 5 to 15 years and rom 46 to 55 years.T here w as a close relatio n- ship betw een species requency and g ap age.T he relationship w as positive w hen gap age w as less than 25 years, negative w hen gap ag e w as rom 25 to 40 years, and the emergence re- quency o tree species tended tow ards stable w hen
