It was mirrored by another inverted pyramid underneath,to reflect sunlight into the room. A central entrance which would link the three major buildings. At first,the public in France reacted harshly to the design,mostly because of the proposed pyramid. One opponent wrote: I am surprised that one would go looking for a Chinese architect in America to deal with the historic heart of the capital of France. However,it becomes the symbol of Paris. National Gallery East Building Time: 1974-1978 The new East Wing extension to the National Gallery,sits on a difficult triangular site. Pei was able to exploit this feature, giving his wadge-shaped building a marvelous sense of presence and sculptural purpose. National Gallery East Building Fragrant Hill Hotel Time: 1982 Atrium Pei created a design based on the simple but nuanced techniques of traditional residential Chinese buildings.Among these were abundant gardens, integration of nature, and careful consideration of the relationship between enclosure and opening. Bank of China Tower Time: 1982-1990 Using the reflective glass that had become something of a trademark for him, Pei organized the facade around a series of boxed X shapes.
