The input for code generation is the intermediate representation and the output of it is equivalent target program, the position of code generation in compiler is shown by Figure 9.1. . As we know that there are several choices for the intermediate language , including: postfix notation, four-address code, three-address code and syntax trees. . In this chapter we assume that the source program has been translated into a reasonably intermediate representation, and the value of identifier appearing in intermediate representation can be directly manipulated. . We also assume that the necessary type checking has been taken place and semantic errors have already been detected. Target program of code generation consists of absolute machine language, relocatable machine language, or assembly language. Here, we use assembly language as the target language for readability. . 9.1 Structure of target program There are three types of target language that are absolute machine-language, relocated machine-language and assembly language. . Using absolute machine-language as target program has the advantage that it can be placed in a fixed location in memory and immediately executed，portable code is a kind of absolute code. . A relocated machine-language program as target program can gain a great deal of flexibility for subprogram to be compiled separately, because a set of relocatable object modules can be linked together and be loaded for execution by a linking loader.
