What they did not have was a way to restructure the system so that the performance requirements were still met. The quality requirements were difficult to satisfy. The redesigned project still had to fit in the original system’s very tiny memory capacity of 32,000 bytes. The program had to be extremely modifiable because the system was testing the real-world implementation of the software engineering design discipline of information hiding. The architecture presented in this case study is not the architecture of the original software but that of a redesign project launched by the Navy software engineers using the A-7E as a demonstration project for their ideas on information hiding as a design strategy.
