Revision: 1. C=LK+ELK+A 2. Commemorative Speeches 3. Homework: a two-minute welcome speech Lecture 5 Skill Focus: Note-taking in CI Topic: Tourism Note-taking is an indispensable tool in CI. The objective of note-taking is to supplement memory efficiently. In other words, the purpose is to avoid misinterpreting or missing some important information. But in CI, the interpreter’s attention should be properly distributed: comprehension 80%, note-taking 20%. Notes are essentially individual in character. As a trainee, you should try to create and get used to your own system of notes, i.e., to create message-carrying symbols which suit you best. (3 months to create and get familiar with your own system of notes; another 3 months to practice over and over again) Basic guidelines to follow: 1. Take notes vertically so as to break up the sentence into sense units for easy digestion. 2. Use slashes to divide information. There should be no more than 4 to 5 messages in each line. 3. Use abbreviations, simple Chinese characters and symbols if possible. 4. Use whatever language that comes to mind as the easiest or most appropriate. 5. The use of shorthand should be discouraged. 6. Use a dividing line to indicate a pause. Symbols: 1. Symbols from the alphabet; K, g, b, Q, 2. Chinese simple characters or radicals 3. Punctuation marks :, ?, …, ! 4. Mathematical symbols 因为,所以, +, =, 0 5. Arrows reference lines: (, (, 6. Negation and affirmation: 7. Interrelation of ideas 1, 2, 3...; b, +,
