Sentence Structure Loose, Periodic, Mixed and Balanced In the Development of Thought, there Are Four Kinds of Sentences Loose sentence Periodic sentence Mixed sentence Balanced (parallel) sentence Loose sentence In speech, especially, you may tend to string ideas together loosely. The sentence may grow longer, but in fact it can be terminated at the end of any one of its succeeding phrases or clauses and still be grammatically complete and have meaning. Examples: He walks six miles / a day / when the weather is suitable / as he needs more exercise. A friend of mine came / from Beijing / to visit me / yesterday. Explanation: A loose sentence is one that puts the main idea before all supplementary information and may be brought to a grammatical close before the end is reached. Compound sentences are loose. A complex sentence is loose if the main clause comes before the subordinate clause. For longer sentences the loose structure is the commonest and most natural. You may use loose sentences when you aim at an easy, natural presentation of ideas or when you enumerate facts or ideas of equal importance. In a loose sentence there is no climax. Periodic sentence A periodic sentence is a more literary, and sometimes more structurally satisfying, kind of sentence. A periodic sentence builds up phrase by phrase and clause by clause to an end which usually comes as a climax to the thought. Examples: As he needs more exercise, when the weather is suitable he walks six miles. Yesterday while I was walking down the street, I met one of my former schoolmates. Explanation: A periodic sentence is not grammatically complete until the end is reached. In a periodic sentence, the main idea is put after all supplementary information. You may use a periodic sentence when you want to achieve climax, since the emphatic key word or words do not appear until the sentence comes to its end.
