Virginia Woolf 1882-1941 I Woolf’s Life 1882. Born (25 Jan) Adeline Virginia Stephen, third child of Leslie Stephen and Julia Duckworth. Brothers Thoby and Adrian went to Cambridge, and her sister Vanessa became a painter. Virginia was educated by private tutors and by extensive reading of literary classics in her father’s library. 1895. Death of her mother. VW had the first of many nervous breakdown. Father later remarried. 1904. Death of father. A second serious breakdown. Moved to Gordon Square in Bloomsbury. The Bloomsbury Group. 1912 Married Leonard Woolf. 1913. Mental illness and her first attempted suicide. Put in care of husband and nurses. 1916. L and VW buy hand printing machine and establish the Hogarth Press. First publication Monday or Tuesday. Later goes on to publish T.S.Eliot, Freud, and VW’s own books. The Bloomsbury Group Meeting frequently until about 1930, the group included novelist E. M. Forster, biographer and essayist Lytton Strachey, painter Duncan Grant, art critics Roger Fry and Clive Bell (Vanessa’s husband), economist John Maynard Keynes, and editor Desmond McCarthy. It was simply a number of friends, wrote Mccarthy, “whose affection and respect for each other…stood the test of thirty years, and whose intellectual candor made their company agreeable to each other.” 1919. Published the realistic novel Night and Day, a story of two friends in London. 1921. The Mark on the Wall published. 1922. Published Jacob’ Room, an experimental novel characterized by the stream-of-consciousness technique 1923. Works on “The Hours”-an early version of Mrs Dalloway. 1939. Moves to Mecklenburgh Square, but lives mainly 1940. London homes damaged/destroyed in blitz. 1941. VW completes Between the Acts, her last novel, then fearing the madness which she felt engulfing her again, filled her pockets with stones and drowned herself in the River Ouse, near Monk’s House.
