[英语学习]Unit 5 Man of the Moment
Man of the Moment Alan Ayckbourn About the Author Alan Ayckbourn is an Olivier, Tony and Moliere Award winning playwright who has written 75 plays, more than half of which have been produced in Londons West End as well as on Broadway and around the world. ? As an acclaimed director, he has worked extensively in the West End and has also run his own company at the National Theatre. Between 1972 and 2009, he was the Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, where the majority of his work has and continues to be premiered. The inspiration for Man Of The Moment is a frequently cited tale, but one which has altered over time. The most accurate version is probably the story he told to the Scarborough Evening News in his first interview about the play. How he passed a flower-seller under Waterloo Bridge every day on the way to work at the National Theatre, only to discover this was the Great Train Robber Buster Edwards, who had become a celebrity since his release from jail. Alan considered it ironic that the Great Train Robbers such as Edwards and Ronnie Biggs had become celebrities, whilst the unfortunate driver of the train, Jack Mills, who had died as a result of the injuries he received that night, had been all but forgotten. / disfigured To mar or spoil the appearance or shape of; deform. disfigure ones face by a deep cut raid An entrance into anothers territory for the purpose of seizing goods or valuables. presently In a short time; soon: She will arrive presently.
