The report issued last week by the National Center for Health Statistics is a shock: the parents of nearly one of every five boys in the United States were so concerned about their sons’ emotional or behavioral problems that they consulted a doctor or a health care professional while about one out of 10 parents of girls reported these kinds of problems. What is bothering children? Some experts suggest that we are witnessing too much ADHD(多动症) and say children need more medication. Others say that environment pollutants found in plastics, among other things, may be taking away their attention and their ability to deal with their emotions. Those experts may be right but I have another suggestion. Let’s examine the way of our children’s education in the last 10 years. Then ask ourselves this challenging question: could some of those changes we have supported in our families and our schools be driving the children crazy? Instead of free play, parents now schedule their kids’ time from dawn until dusk (and sometimes beyond). By age 4, an ever-increasing number of children are admitted topreschools. There, instead of learning to get along with other kids, and play Duck, Duck, Goose, children, even those under 3, are asked to learn computer skills or study foreign languages. The drumbeat for early learning gets even louder when they enter “real” school. The first graders are now routinely expected to master a subject considered appropriate for second, even third graders 15 years ago. The way we teach children has changed, too. In many communities, elementary schools have become test-prep factories—where standardized testing begins in kindergarten and “teaching to the test” is considered a virtue.
