Active support (AS) is a family of approaches designed to help staff organise and deliver practical support for meaningful client participation in every-day activities. Following training in AS, staff teams have been found to provide more assistance for clientparticipation(e.g.,Bradshawetal.,2004;Jones,Felce,etal.,2001;Jones,Perry,etal.,1999;Mansell,Elliott,Beadle-Brown,Ashman,Macdonald,2002;Stancliffe,Harman,Toogood,McVilly,2007),and support that is more effective, delivered in better ratio to need and positively correlated with improvements in client engagement (Felce et al., 2000; Smith,Felce, Jones, Lowe 2002).
Training in AS typically comprises a 1- or 2-day team-based workshop, followed soon afterwards by a series of individually tailored coaching sessions (interactive training) delivered onsite. Staff also received written materials explaining the function of AS components (Jones,Perry et al., 1996, Booklets 1–6). Trainers then worked onsite individually with each member of staff in a series of sessions designed to improve the quality of staff support for client engagement in everyday activities within the home (e.g., Toogood, 2004).Stancliffe et al. (2007) adopted a similar approach to onsite training, but extended the model to include opportunities for staff to: (a) practise using the Activity Support Plans and Opportunity Plans theyhad prepared during workshop training; (b) work with clients in ratios other than 1:1; and (c) include community locations withi
