Unit 12 Life in Canada British Influence Long association with British and the presence of so many British people settling in Canada meant that many British customs became part of the practice in Canada. American Influence Being so close to and aware of life in the United States has also been a significant influence. Their own life is the base. The everyday experience of Canadians settling and developing the country has also been very important and often has been the base upon which British and American influences have been grated onto. A Unique Combination Canadian social customs are a unique combination of influences that have similarities to and differences from the other English-speaking countries. Individuality and Personal Independence Individuality and personal independence are two qualities encouraged in Canadian society. This emphasis upon individuality and independence is not as strong as found in the United States which places a much greater importance on “doing one’s own thing”, “being one’s own person”. Informality Generally, Canadian society leans towards informality rather than formality. The British are more formal while the Americans are more informal. Comfort Zone In Canada, the generally accepted personal space between two people is about 2 feet or at an arms length. When someone stands closer, Canadians feel “uncomfortable”, feeling that that person is being “aggressive” and “in their face”. Misunderstandings Misunderstandings frequently occur when the people involved are from different cultures that define personal space very differently. Touching Another aspect of personal space involves touching the other person. Unless it is among friends or loved ones, Canadians don’t usually touch the other person. Personal Space Putting an arm around a person’s shoulder, patting their head or face, or holding their hands is not accepted among general acquaintances.
