Introduction to English Literature Course Introduction Course name: Introduction to English Literature Instructors: Kong Linglin Office: Room 308, English Education Department E-mail: wenxuedaolun2010@126.com Credits: 2 Course book: Elements of Literature Course duration: 15 weeks Course Description: Introduction to English Literature is one of the foundation courses. This course is designed to provide a comprehensive presentation to the introduction of literature, helping the students get to know the elements of literature, and preparing for the literature study in the future. Course Objectives: Students who have taken this course should be able to: Identify, analyze and critique information pertinent to the three forms of literature, including fiction, poetry and drama. Develop the ability to analyze the elements of literature. Grasp some critical skills, such as analyzing plot, character, theme, point of view, tone, etc. Make full use of the skills to appreciate literature works. Course Requirements: Class attendance is required and consideration will be given in grading. (20%) Presentation of half or one chapter of the course book (10%). (ppt, explanation, analysis, time) Assignments in written form (such as the analysis of some literature works) spread throughout the semester (10%). A final exam paper of questions will be presented based on lectures and required reading materials. (60%) Course Content: Teaching Procedure: Warm-up question: Brainstorm anything when mentioning literature. The Genre of Literature Fiction (in a broad sense): novels, short stories, plays (dramas) and poetry Fiction:虚构小说(in a narrow sense) Non-fiction(Essay or prose): description, narration, exposition, and argumentation. Read the following: Why do you think it is a story? 1) It tells us something imagined rather than real. 2) It has something to do with an image of people we meet in our daily life. 3) It has a character and the character does something in a certain place
