I also owe my sincere gratitude to my friends and my fellow classmates who gave me their help and time in listening to me and helping me work out my problems during the difficult course of the thesis. Abstract Dates back to the time, before Tang Dynasty, there are many procedures in Chinese wedding custom. The book records earliest wedding ceremony, says that marriage includes six etiquettes, namely, proposing, asking the name, asking for fortune, sending betrothal presents to the girl’s family, discussing the date of the marriage and meeting the bride. In British wedding custom before 16th, there are four procedures which are proposal, changing surnames, choosing the day and holding the wedding. Because of the different cultural origins and marriage concepts and religions，there are many differences existing in the two kinds of wedding customs. In China, matchmaker functions almost all the time and youths have no right to choose.
