Ju Xingsong March 2010 第四章 定义（Definition） 第一节 定义与定义的功能 第二节 定义的种类 第三节 定义写作的注意事项 第四节 写定义常用的词汇、句型与表达式 第五节 定义的写作技巧 §4.1 定义与定义的功能 定义 定义是对一事物的本质特征或一个概念的内涵和外延的确切而简要的说明。 要求：精确、全面。 表述：短至一个同义词或长达几页的文字。 何种方式：取决于读者对这一主题的了解有多深及还打算让读者再了解多少。 §4.1 定义与定义的功能 定义的功能 使难以理解的、模糊的、抽象的、有争议的概念或科学技术上的专门术语以及在特定文章中某一概念的特定含义清楚确切； 使信息交流者之间对事物的理解有一共同基础； 使研究向纵深发展。 §4.2 定义的种类（Types） 在科技英语写作中，定义通常有以下四个种类： 正式定义（Formal definition） 广延定义（Extensive definition） 学术定义（Academic definition） 个人定义（Personal definition） §4.2 定义的种类（Types） 一、正式定义 正式定义包括以下三个方面的内容： 所要下定义的事物或概念； 这一事物或概念所属的种类或范畴，即种差； 这一事物或概念区别于同类中其它事物或概念的特点。 例1 所要下定义的词 类属 区别于其它交通工具的特点 A gig is a vehicle for one or more passengers operating on two wheels joined by an axle, and drawn by a horse. §4.2 定义的种类（Types） 正式定义中这三部分内容也是其它定义的基础。 词典、百科全书、科技著作或科技论文中的定义大多是正式定义。 定义常用关系代词引导的定语从句来详细说明所下定义的事物或概念的内涵和外延。 例2 Gravity is the attraction between objects in the universe that keeps our moon going around the earth, that keeps the earth and the other planets going around the sun, and that brings down to earth an object tossed into the air. §4.2 定义的种类（Types） 在写正式定义时应注意的4个问题 1）不要把所下定义的词置于太大的总类之中 例3 第一组： 1.
