Write a Well-focused Topic Sentence Remember: In an essay, each paragraph’s topic sentence must support the thesis of the essay. A topic sentence is to a paragraph what a thesis statement is to an essay. Remember! Topic sentences ARE NOT the same as the topic of an essay. II. Include Unified, Specific Supporting Details In addition to including well-focused topic sentences, an effective paragraph is unified and provides concrete details that work together to support the main point. II. Include Unified, Specific Supporting Details To make a paragraph concrete and specific, use the following guidelines: Provide exact details. Vague: Liu Mang has been driving around in his new car. It’s yellow and low to the ground. It looks like the kind of car you see on racetracks. Specific: Liu Mang’s new canary yellow Mercedes Benz has a black pinstripe down each side. Its mag wheels are shiny with new chrome, and the headlights pop up at the push of a button. II. Include Unified, Specific Supporting Details Focus on Who, What, When, Where, How and Why? Vague: Some animals hibernate for part of the year. (What animals? When do they hibernate?) Specific: Some bears hibernate for three to four months each winter. Include the names of people, places, brands, and objects. Vague: When my sixty-three-year-old aunt was refused a job, she became an angry victim of age discrimination. Specific: When my sixty-three-year-old aunt Angela was refused a job at Mei Rong Mei Fa Salon, she became an angry victim of age discrimination. II. Include Unified, Specific Supporting Details Use action verbs. Select strong verbs that will help your readers visualize the action. Vague: When Michael Jackson came on stage, the audience became excited. Specific: When Michael Jackson burst onto the stage, the audience screamed, cheered, and
