* The very first consideration to be made is whether the camera is to be placed indoors or outdoors. Whereas in many cases cameras will not be in direct contact with the rain, it still needs to be reasonably water-resistant rated to prevent moisture from entering the more sensitive electronic components within the housing. In many locales where the ambient temperature can lower below freezing, housings equipped with heaters will be necessary. It is measured in millimeters, where a lower value means a wider field of view, and a higher values denote a better close-up. Common lenses for video surveillance can range from 2.5mm, which is very wide lens, to over 100mm in focal length. Different applications call for different focal lengths. However, in many cases one will not know what focal length is best suited for a scene until the camera has been mounted on site. * There are types of lenses with different focal length properties: fixed, vari-focal, and zoom lenses. Fixed lenses, as the name suggests, have only one focal length. It sees only the fixed field of view; the only way to have that changed is to change a different lens altogether. A vari-focal lens, as seen in this CAM-7300 rugged dome camera, is many times preferred by installers. It gives a limited range of focal length with can be adjusted for the best possible field of view after it has been installed. A zoom lens, often seen in pan/tilt/zoom cameras, is a motorized lens that allows remote zoom in and out using serial control. This usually offers the best range and easiest fo
