By shaping the element in the form of a helix and permitting the slider to move along the helix as it rotates, the length can be increased further with a corresponding increase in accuracy. The resultant unit is a multiturn potentiometer, and it is frequently made in 3-,10- and 15-turn sizes. Obviously, the shaft in a multiturn unit cannot rotate continuously, and mechanical stops are the limits of travel.
