Lecture 3 Graph and Summary Writing Graph Writing There are two types: exposition and argument. For exposition, the main focus is to describe and inform the readers of the graph in detail; for the argument, problems and phenomena are not given in words, but in graphs or statistics, so the main purpose is to use the information or the statistics given to explain or justify your opinion. Study the direction and title carefully. eg. Study the following graphs carefully and write an essay in at least 200 words. Your essay should cover these points: effect of the country’s growing human population on its wildlife possible reason for the effect your suggestions for wildlife protection Decide which type you are required to write: exposition or argument type. 除了研读图表外，还要根据作文指令弄清作文是说明文还是议论文。是说明文，那么作文主要是对图表的描写，因此，描写要详细。如果是议论文，则图表的描写只是文章的一小部分。这时的图表描写一般在文章的开始。图表的描写，数据的引用只是用来反映文章要写的问题或倾向。 Exposition Type: Graph description in detail Plan: Para. 1: Introduction: (2 or 3 sentences) A general statement to introduce the graph: The table/graph/diagram,etc. is about + key words in the title given: mention period, subject, data type (figure or percentage), put in one sentence.. (Refer to the direction) The second sentence serving as a map to describe: the structure or organization of the information in the graph: the figures are divided into …groups/the vertical axis shows …, and the horizontal axis presents ….. Or the second sentence can describe the trend: According to the table + trend (topic sentence) Topic sentence: the information in the table, figures and what they are for, whom and when the figures apply---informative. The second sentence: how groups of information are given in the table or how the information is grouped, indicating the structure of the body---like a map, providing a sense of direction.
